"You scared that the registration act will reveal you? You scared to let people know who you are?" Ear knew he was pushing it but he wanted to know how far he could go, best way push harder than you know is safe then back off.
Ear raised his right eyebrow. "Bend in half? What can he do control metal?" Ear was joking, but knew anything as possible if she could morph shapes. If that was possible what else was? He gave himself a mental shake because that little nick in the back of his brain was back.

She smiled as the boy tried to get to her. He really was much more entertaining than Moss. Not for the first time since she'd disposed of the man, she was glad that she still had someone there for company. Stifling a laugh as he attempted a joke, she simply answered, "Yes, that's exactly what he can do."
The MRA was a slightly harder question to answer, so she had decided to take it second. "As for my personal fear, no. I can handle myself. But imagine- imagine if you were a mutant, Adam. Think how easily I was able to, well... capture you. If this act is passed, it would have been even easier. And the capture would have been made most likely by some bigoted human. And that's not even mentioning the other set of laws that are ready to be put into place. Laws that make it legal for mutants to be hunted like animals. How would you like it if someone came into your home to capture you simply because you were different than they?"

Ear watched as she laughed, was she really enjoying this or was it a fake? He never quit asking these questions, they were part of his life and keeping himself alive. The answers to both of his questions were satisfactory and it seemed he could push harder than that and still be in the green.
imagine- imagine if you were a mutant Something niggled in the back of his brain for the third time that day and Ear wanted to shake it away. "If they wanted to find me they would have a hard time. I've been hiding my entire life." He snorted. "I also wasn't expecting a blue woman with a gun to hear me coming up those stairs." He didn't mention that he could have heard her coming if he had thought to check the door but he wanted to keep his ability secret. Necessity had forged the sharp ears for him and he exploited that for himself by keeping it a hidden ability.

She sighed as she turned to look at him. "The fact of the matter is, you're sitting here right now instead of rifling through my belongings as you had intended. And When I say 'hunt you,' I'm not talking about some fat man drinking beer in the woods with a shotgun. I'm talking about trained professionals, veritable machines. Their sole purpose is to track down and kill or capture mutants. They would not be so easy to hide from as... as a blue woman with a gun, for instance."
She looked at the clock and sped up, weaving in-between the traffic. "And if you were really so good at hiding, Adam, you wouldn't have had to get yourself in a position where you could be caught."

Machines huh? This mutant thing had to be more serious than he thought. Surely if people were this worried about it there had to be more than just the few he had heard people talking about. What had he heard? Ear went back trying ot remember. Flying, laserbeams from the eyes, teleporation? Yeah that was it.
And if you were really so good at hiding, Adam, you wouldn't have had to get yourself in a position where you could be caught. Ear nearly blew up. She was right but it wasn't her place to point out a fact like that. He took a deep breath and shook his head. "I could have heard you coming if I had wanted to."

She rolled her eyes and turned to him briefly before putting her concentration back on the road. "Those doors are nearly soundproof. Those walls are nearly soundproof. Nobody could have heard me coming. You give yourself too much credit, young man."
She glanced over at him again. He was pouting. Pouting like a little kid. Surely he had more respect for himself than to revert back to childish manners? Perhaps not. He certainly had a short fuse, that much was evident. Had he been a mutant, the trip might have had a different ending, one that involved him joining the Brotherhood. He certainly seemed to have enough pent up rage to fit in better than Moss.

"To much credit?" He laughed almost wanting to tell her everything htat he had done the nineteen years he had spent on the streets. "I hardly thought that any person soft enough to live in the penthouse would have bothered with guns. They wouldn't have even bothered with locking the door. If I had wanted to I could have heard everyword of the converstation you were having with el stupido before you even knew I was there."
Ear was shaking with rage inside. He was angry now, very angry. This woman was under estimating him and it was ticking him off. He was tensed now but sitting back in a relaxed posture.

She smirked. Something was bothering him. Not that she blamed him, but he certainly had guts. "As you've undoubtedly discovered, soft is not a word that describes me. And just how did you intend to go about hearing what we were saying? The doors were closed."
She was starting to get angry at his cockiness, but managed to maintain a neutral face. No way was she going to let this... child get the better of her.

Ear smirked. "I never said it described you I said people who own the penthouses are soft. Soft, weak, pathetic." He said each word mokingly. He was enjoying this now, but kept that under wraps. He so enjoyed pushing her buttons he almost wanted to stay around so he could continue.
"I could have heard your converstion the same way I can hear each and everyone of your heartbeats right now." Ear proceeded to prove it but thub-dubbing with Mystiques heart. Neuteral face though she may show he knew he had to be getting to her at least a little, no one had this much patience or room for him to push at.

She looked over at him again. "I own the penthouse. Thus you were describing me. But that doesn't matter." She looked at a passing mile marker and the clock. "We'll be there within a few hours. Care to tell me exactly how you are able to hear my heartbeat from where you are sitting?"
She didn't like playing these kinds of games, and she had very little patience for them. And being called soft... well, that just made her want to prove him otherwise. Killing this boy, however, would probably not be worth the bullet used.

"If it doesn't matter why did you even say anything about it." Ear snapped at her. She was really infuriating when she stated the obvious. He had thought Mystique better than that.
Ear beat himself mentally for giving away his one talent. He had been so wrapped up he had lost control of his mouth. "I just can, can't explain it really, I just think of where I want to hear and I can." He made it snappy and hopefully hard to hear.

She simply smiled as he snapped. He was allowed to bark all he wanted, but chances were that he knew better than to bite. He'd already admitted that he wasn't goign to visit a friend, as he had previously stated, and now he was giving away information that she hadn't even suspected he had to share. "So, you're a mutant, then?"
This could end up working to her advantage. As it so happened, a room had just opened up at the Brotherhood's place of residence. Ear might have to clear out some dead plants, but otherwise, she had a feeling that he'd be right at home.

Ear stared at her. Something was niggling the back of his brain again. "No, I'm not." He felt he already had this argument before but couldn't remember when or where. "I don't have anything that years of living on the streets couldn't teach me, nothing. No wings, no telepathy, nothing."
Ear had a feeling that this piece of information was meaning more to her than Ear thought it would. This was about to get nasty if he couldn't convince her otherwise. His breath got a little shallower but only the rise and fall of his chest revealed that.

She smiled as she checked the map again. "How old are you, Adam? eighteen? I spent more than thirty years living on the streets when I was younger. I am still unable to listen in on conversations that take place on the opposite side of a soundproof room. No matter how badly I want to hear it."
She pulled off of the exit and into Washington DC proper. Turning to Adam again, she smiled. "You're going to have a great time in Washington."

"I'm sure I'll love it." He pondered what Mystique had said. Was it true? No it can't be, never. That niggling pushed harder but never broke through, it was as if someone had wiped it from his memory. "I hope you know that if I'm caught it will be death row for me."
He hoped this would put Mystique off a bit, maybe have her dump him on the side of the road. It was a great risk, but now he just needed to try everything.
