Black Tom
As Tom sat on the bed with his drink, he thought about how different this situation was to what he was used to. He was normally in charge, making sure everything fell in place perfectly and correcting what didn't. He found himself to be quite bored. Being an underling wasn't very fulfilling, but he could easily find something, or someone, that could be.
He walked to the closet where he hung his uniform and cursed himself for not bringing anything else. It was usually all he needed. Deciding it woud have to do, he put it back and threw his coat on over it. He felt a small buzz from the rum he had brought with him but not nearly enough to hurt his composure. The Billiards room was calling him.

Tom opened his door to immediatley find the blonde he'd picked up earlier, lying naked on his bed. He had neither the strength nor the inclination to sleep with her anymore. Pulling money from his pocket, Tom threw the woman what he owed her and said "Get out." His voice was cold, angry, and his eyes told her that it wasn't a game. Looking hurt and humiliated, she scrambled to her feet and put her clothes on. Tom's eyes never left the woman. He stared at her as if she was some animal that wondered into his room. He longer he looked, the more visably upset she became. Tom reveled in it, this woman's pain was his sick joy in his current state. By the time she left, she was almost crying.
Once she was gone, Tom sat down on his bed. His hands ran from his face to the back of his head and back again. Tears he wouldn't allow to show in front of the tow men in that room now flowed freely down his face. The girl, no the woman, he loved more than any other being on this planet or any other just slapped him in anger. She said things that tore at his heart like wild dogs in his chest. She was leaving him, going away with God knows who. Who would take care of her?

Theresa let her door close softly behind her then she leaned against it for a few minutes. Taking several deep breaths, she closed her eyes and tried to get a grip on her emotions. The anger.... no, rage, she had felt earlier had been so strong. Why had she been so mad? Because Tom was trying to kill Alex, she thought to herself.
Running her fingers through the top of her hair, she wondered just how she let everything get so complicated. Not that it really mattered. It was complicated now and she was going to have to find a way to make things right again. Pushing herself off the door, she knew she couldn't put it off any longer. She had to see Tom, talk to him. If he would even open his door to her.
Walking slowly, like a child who knew they had done something bad and had to tell their parents about it, Theresa finally made it to his door. She couldn't hear anything inside but that didn't mean he wasn't there. Raising her hand tentatively, she knocked twice, then called out softly, "Tom? It's me. Can I come in?"
It was the moment of truth. Would he turn her away now? Would he tell her to never come near him again? At the thought, tears came into her eyes again and she bit her bottom lip to try and control them.

Tom looked up from the palms of his hands as he heard Theresa's voice. He honestly didn't expect to see her again until Magneto called them in the morning. She spoke softly, which was the only reason he would let her in. After what just happened, he couldn't take any more abuse from her, and he didn't know how to fight back anymore. "Come in," he said, not moving or even fixing himself to look like he wasn't just crying.

His voice was strained and Theresa closed her eyes for a second to regain her composure before opening the door. She was surprised he left it opened like that but she walked through the door and closed it behind her walking in until she saw him. At the sight of Tom sitting there on the bed, tears still fresh on his face, Theresa couldn't hold back her surprise. He looked broken. Completely broken and it was all her fault.
Crossing the short distance to him, she hesitated in what to do. Before when they fought, they wouldn't stop yelling until they had come to an agreement, neither one walking away. This time, she walked away and more and it was only right for her to make amends.
Kneeling in front of him and looking up into his dark blue eyes, she reached up and gently brushed the tears off his cheeks, her own threatening to spill again. How she could have driven him to this after all he had done for her made her sick. Tom didn't have to take her in when Sean abandoned her. He didn't have to feed her, clothe her, make sure she had a roof over her head. He could have handed her off to an orphanage and no one would have blinked an eye. It was unheard of for a young bachelor to take in his cousin's infant for any reason. But he did it and she grew up happy, adored and loved. God, he loved her when he had no reason to and heaven help her, she loved him more then anything.
Dropping her hand into her lap, she also drop her eye contact and watched as a few tears splashed onto her hands. Not able to look him in the eyes for fear of breaking down, she whispered, "I am so sorry."

As she reached up and touched his face, Tom smiled involountarily. The feeling was similar to when he first held her in his arms. In his heart, he knew that this was the beginning of a new era of his life. He would be alone again, completely alone. She wouldn't be there when he came home anymore. Part of him wanted to beg her to stay, offer to quit, go back to Ireland, even let that Alex guy tag along. But the other part knew she was better off without him now. She wasn't cut out for the life of crime. She had a good heart, and it would go to waste with him and the brotherhood.
Reaching down, he touched her cheek and wiped away her tears as she had done for him. "It's ok, I deserved it. I wasn't ready for you to leave the nest yet, and I said some terrible things." He tried to comfort her. Anger he could deal with, but his heart broke when she was sad.

Theresa looked back up at him when he gently wiped her tears away and said, "It's ok, I deserved it. I wasn't ready for you to leave the nest yet, and I said some terrible things."
Giving him a watery smile, she leaned into him and wrapped her arms around his waist. He had forgiven her and that was all that mattered. Holding him tightly, she said quietly, "I love ya, Tom. Ya mean more ta me than anyone else."
She just held him tightly for a few moments before letting go and sitting back on her knees again. Looking up at him, her tears drying, she continued, "I want ta get ta know Alex, ta be with him. He's been so kind and gentle and I know he won't hurt me. I also want you ta get ta know him, Tom. It would mean so much ta me." Not realizing that he had just set her free, she added, "Maybe after we are done here, we can all go back ta tha Keep together."

Tom pulled Theresa to his chest when she hugged him. Her embrace was warm and loving, nothing like the women he would occasionally pick up. This is what he would miss the most, the quiet moments, holding each other. "I love ya too, theresa, more than ya could imagine."
He couldn't keep his tears down when she asked for the tree of them to go back to the keep. He would love to, even with the intruder in their lives. It couldn't be done though. Just like her childhood, he wouldn't be able to stay away from his work. He would start taking small jobs here and there, until he eventually he would start leaving for weeks at a time. "Theresa, I think you should go with him. I should have let you out into the world years ago. I was selfish and I'm not going to let that hold you back anymore."

Theresa was confused as to why he started to cry again when she mentioned them all going to the Keep. Before she could ask what was wrong, Tom said, "Theresa, I think you should go with him. I should have let you out into the world years ago. I was selfish and I'm not going to let that hold you back anymore."
Theresa blinked. Did that mean she wasn't wanted at home, at Cassidy Keep any longer? Would she never see Tom again? Even more confused then before, she looked up at him and asked those very questions. "Am I not allowed ta come home anymore, Tom? Will I ever see ya again?"
As much as she wanted to be with Alex, she couldn't stand the thought of never seeing Tom again or feeling the cool Irish breeze on her face at the Keep. She held her breath as she waited for him to answer.

She looked up at him with her big blue eyes and asked a question that struck Tom's heart. Honestly though, niether of them were welcome. Even though he was the rightful heir, Tom didn't belong in the keep, it was Sean's. No one was willing to force him out though. He assumed the reason it was so easy to keep Theresa a secret was because they were to afraid to confront the family's black sheep. He reached down to gently stroke her hair, smiled, and said "Until I take yuir key, yuir always welcome home. And nothing can keep me from seeing you again. I'm just trying ta do something right for once. I kept ya locked up yuir entire life. Now, it's yuir time ta get out and learn about the world, learn tha things I wouldn't allow ya too."
The memories of the family also brought up a subject he hoped would never come up, her father. Theresa never doubted what Tom told her about Sean. She seemed to hate the man for leaving her. If he told her, would she hate him like she did her father? He couldn't stand the thought. She was the only love he had left. Maeve was gone, so was Cain. He wasn't sure if he could survive with Theresa completely out of his life.

Theresa gave him a big smile and briefly hugged him again. "Ya realize I woulda hunted ya down if ya told me I could never see you again," she told him with a laugh.
Sitting down on the bed next to him, she leaned against his shoulder. Things were changing between them. For her whole life, it had been the two of them, just the two of them. She was never sure why he didn't settle down and marry someone and she used to blame herself for it but now she knew better. Well, kind of. It was because of his "business". A business he just told her she didn't belong in.
Sighing, she looked up at him and said, "I'll be next door when Magneto is ready fer us. Alex is with me since there's a large hole in his wall and his door is a bit broken." She smiled when she said that to him. Now that everything was said and done, it really was nice to know that had she been in real trouble, Tom would have done everything in his power to save her. She was just sorry she didn't realize that at the time. "Thank ya for trying ta 'rescue' me earlier, Uncle Tom," she said a bit sheepishly.
Standing up, she walked toward the door and just before she opened it, she turned back to ask, "By tha way, how did ya find me?"

I'll be next door when Magneto is ready fer us. Alex is with me since there's a large hole in his wall and his door is a bit broken. Theresa said as she stood up. Tom sneered behind her back. God, he hoped they kept the 'noise' to a minimum. His facial expression changed as she turned around and asked one more question.
Exodus, he told Tom what she was up to. Thinking more clearly now, he could put the pieces together on Exodus's little plan. He wanted Tom to call attetion to himself and blow their cover so Magneto would throw Tom out of the brotherhood. His eyes narrowed and the smile left his face. "I'll deal with that matter Theresa, and I don't want ya coming with tha Brotherhood tomarrow. There's no point in doing something ya might regret if yuir leaving."
He stood up and walked to Theresa, taking her in his arms again. "If I don't see ya again before we both depart, I love ya Theresa." He held her close for a few seconds then let go. He still stared at her though, taking in her immense beauty. If this was the last time he would ever see her, he wanted to remember it. Finally breaking his gaze, Tom closed the door and locked it, before walking away to find Exodus.

Tom walked back into his room after his meeting with Exodus and Magneto. Things weren’t going to work out as he planned. He wanted Theresa and her new infatuation to get out of town before the brotherhood went to work. But if Alex was an X-Man, she would be right in the thick of things. He’d have to talk to her in the morning.
Tom sat down at the small table in the room. Picking up a pen and a piece of Regency stationary, he began to write. He was writing a letter to Theresa. There were things he should have told her years ago, things that she would most likely hate him for. This may be his last chance at coming clean. It seemed like he only did the right thing when it came to her. He always thought of her as a angel but it was closer to the truth than he ever admitted to anyone. Again, the tears began to flow down his cheeks as he laid it all out for her. The truth about her father and the family, how he’d lied to her since she was old enough to talk, but most importantly, how she’d made his life seem so much more meaningful.
With the letter finished, he placed the paper in an envelope with a large amount of cash, close to ten thousand dollars. He wrote her name on the front of the envelope. Looking at the clock, it was mourning again, two days without sleep. He’d gone longer but honestly, Tom was getting up there in age. He wasn’t a young man anymore, almost forty. Anyway, no time to think about it now. He expected a call from Exodus any minute now for a meeting. He wanted to get some food before getting started. He’d barely eaten the day before. Tom called room service and ordered a huge breakfast, trying to make up for not eating. Once it arrived he wasted little time devouring it.

Tom felt much better (and larger) once he finished the breakfast he ordered. Surprisingly, he wasn’t called away while eating. He rolled the cart out into the hallway and sat back down on his bed. God, he was bored. He never realized how utterly boring these kinds of jobs could be when he didn’t plan them himself. He flipped through every channel and even tried to take a nap. Nothing could to get rid of his utter boredom. Finally. Tom stood up. If nothing was going to happen, he’d find something to do.
