Alex continued to look into ther eyes as they held each other, Theresa giving in finally to stay with him. The happiness present in her smile Alex was in the process of explaining his feelings for her but the door kicked in off it's hinges. The man in the doorway held a wooden can and was clearly drunk. The stench of alcohol wafted into the room as soon as the door swung open.
"Take yuir hands offa her, you piece a trash," the drunken man ordered to him. The accent reminded him of Theresa's but it didn't hold the same melody as hers. Her's flowed like poetry but this man's accent was forceful but not at all intimidating. Alex wasn't too happy with being rudely interrupted and definately wasn't going to let go of Theresa when this madman was on a drunken rampage. Before he could register his anger, the irishman lifted his cane and fired a blast near him. it was close and he could feel the heat from it. He heard the wall behind him give way to the blast. It happened all too fast. Not Alex's rage burned through his eye's. He was ready to fire back at him but Theresa moved to stand in front of him. The gesture was seet but there was no way he was going to put Theresa in danger in place of himself.
"Tom, stop! I don't know how ya found me but he isn't hurting me!" Theresa yelled back at the man in the doorway. So this was the infamous cousin Tom, Alex thought to himself, pulling back the plasma blast that he was about to release at the man. Theresa raised an interesting question. How did cousin Tom find her? Alex placed his hands on top of Theresa's shoulders to comfort her slightly. There was no reason to get worked up. The man was her family, and from what she has told him about her life, the only family she had left. Alex decided to show the man some respect even though Tom didn't show them any. He already didn't like the guy but he wasn't going to show it, for Theresa's sake. But Tom seriously needed to calm down and sober up for Alex to remain civil with him.
"So you must be Theresa's cousin, Tom," Alex said, walking past Theresa. He held his hand out to greet the man. "My name's Alex. Theresa's told me a lot about you."

Scott was almost to Alex's room when he heard Jean in his mind through their link. < It’ll be alright, love. I won’t let anything happen to Charles. And seeing as Magneto is being very frank, we might be able to learn some valuable information concerning the Senate hearing. I’ll join you soon. > Her mental kiss brought a brief smile to his lips.
<Thanks honey, > Scott replied. < I'm just going to go visit Alex, get my mind off everything for awhile. I'll be in his room. Be careful, Charles is blind when it comes to Magneto. > Even though he knew their mentor needed someone to look after him around the 'Master of Magnetism', Cyclops wished that it didn't have to be his wife.
He rounded the corner to Alex's room just in time to see the back of a dark haired man and hear fling angry words in a heavy, drunken Irish accent at inhabitants of the room. "Take yuir hands offa her, you piece a trash." Then he saw the flash of light and heard something in the room get hit.
That was enough for Scott. He dropped his bag right there and immediately pulled out the visor he always carried. He switched them and started towards the room. "Tom, stop! I don't know how ya found me but he isn't hurting me!" a woman with an Irish accent screamed at the man in the doorway. Cyclops groaned under his breath. What had his brother gotten himself into?
Moving into the hallway directly behind the dark haired man, Tom, he'd assume by the woman's words, Scott finally heard his brother speaking. "So you must be Theresa's cousin, Tom," Alex began, sounding much friendlier towards the man than he expected. He could see into the room now and both his brother and the lovely redheaded woman in there looked fine. The wall would never be the same though. "My name's Alex. Theresa's told me a lot about you."
Cyclops doubted very much that Cousin Tom was going to stand for pleasantries. At least, as long as he thought he had the advantage. So he spoke up. "And I'm Scott, Alex's older brother," he said calmly. "Now what's going on here?"

Tom's anger only rose as this Dog of a man dared to introduce himself. Ignoring the man behind him, Tom used his cane to slap away Alex's hand and stomped over in front of Theresa. "How could ya allow yuirself to be manipulated by this piece of Drekk who lowers himself ta picking up women in a hotel lobby? I thought ya were smarter than that." He screamed at her.
He then turned to the blonde man, who was apparently Alex, like he would have a name in a few minutes. "And you, ya call yuirself a man but debase yuirself by picking naive young woman at a hotel of all places. What happened, ya couldn't just buy a woman like tha other street trash?" Tom knew what kind of man this was. Arguably, he was that kind of man, considering he had a woman waiting in his room, not that he made the connection.
Tom then turned to Scott. He didn't know who this was or why he was here, but he was getting the same treatment as everyone else. "This is a family affair and you should do yuirself a favor and get tha hell out. Take yuir goofy looking facemask and forget that any of this happened." Tom breathed heavily as he finished his ranting on the situation. he was so angry that he almiost expected his head to pop.

Alex was going to get himself killed. Theresa knew that look on Tom's face and although she had personally never brought it on before now, she had still seen it when he dealt with others. Before she could move, someone else appeared in the doorway claiming to be Alex's brother. Theresa had no idea that Alex had a brother at the hotel.
Her confusion soon turned to anger, though, when Tom knocked Alex's hand away with his cane and approached her. "How could ya allow yuirself to be manipulated by this piece of Drekk who lowers himself ta picking up women in a hotel lobby? I thought ya were smarter than that, he screamed at her before turning his back and addressing Alex and Alex's brother.
Standing behind him, Theresa seethed. Did he just call me a stupid whore? she ranted to herself. After his little tirade to the others, Tom seemed to be out of breath which was just fine with her. She had a few things on her mind that needed to be said and she didn't care who heard them.
Her hands curled into small fists at her side, Theresa marched in front of Tom, mere inches separating them as she looked up, her light blue eyes flashing in anger. "Ya have no right ta be here, Tom," she started slowly, her voice deceivingly calm. "Ya have hardly said two words ta me since we left Genosha. I don't even know what tha hell we are doing here but I came here ta be with you. So what do ya do? Ya dump in a hotel room and tell me not ta trust anyone, including you!" By now, Theresa's voice had risen several notches and she was barely holding back her temper.
"So I decided ta entertain myself, as I 'ave done most of my life since ya were gone for so much of it, and in the process I happened to meet Alex. You want ta know what we did? We went ta a damned Christmas tree lighting in tha city! Someone cared enough ta want ta be with me and now that ya may have ta share my attention with someone else, ya decide ta become tha possessive father. My father left me, Tom. Yuir not and have never been my father. What I do with Alex is none of yuir business," Theresa finished, trying to hold back a scream. She was beyond angry now. She was furious.
If she had actually stopped to think about what she was saying, she would have never said most of it. She loved him more then life itself but dammit, he made her so mad!

Tom simply slapped Alex's hand away with his cane. It was so blantently rude that Alex almost punched him right then but it wouldn't have been right. He was drunk and acting like an ass. Alex has been there himself and he thought that Tom might be different when he was sober. But he wasn't sober now and Alex didn't see a need for his obnoxious behavior. It was uncalled for. The fact that he was screaming at Theresa was reason enough for Alex to lose control of his temper. He started to step closer to them, ignoring his brother's arrival for the time being, but Tom turned his attention back to Alex.
"And you, ya call yuirself a man but debase yuirself by picking naive young woman at a hotel of all places. What happened, ya couldn't just buy a woman like tha other street trash?" Tom yelled in his direction. Alex's anger was almost to it's limit now. First he breaks the door down, then insults Theresa, then insults him, then insults his brother. Tom just crossed the line. Alex started advancing towards him but Theresa once again stepped in between them.
"Ya have no right ta be here, Tom. Ya have hardly said two words ta me since we left Genosha. I don't even know what tha hell we are doing here but I came here ta be with you. So what do ya do? Ya dump in a hotel room and tell me not ta trust anyone, including you! So I decided ta entertain myself, as I 'ave done most of my life since ya were gone for so much of it, and in the process I happened to meet Alex. You want ta know what we did? We went ta a damned Christmas tree lighting in tha city! Someone cared enough ta want ta be with me and now that ya may have ta share my attention with someone else, ya decide ta become tha possessive father. My father left me, Tom. Yuir not and have never been my father. What I do with Alex is none of yuir business," Theresa finished yelling to Alex's surprise. His anger was gone and replaced with a need to hold Theresa again. He didn't want her to be filled with that much anger.
What hurt him the most was when she said Alex was just her entertainment. He didn't know that was all he meant to her. It crushed him and Alex took a step back feeling awkward in their family business. Scott was still there to observe everything but it seemed like Theresa had Tom handled. But now Alex just wondered, now, we he stood with Theresa. He was about to tell her exactly how he feels about her but now it's only going to hurt him more if those feelings weren't reciprocated.

Scott fought the urge to deck Tom when he slapped aside Alex's hand with the cane and yelled the red-haired woman. He almost had to grin when the woman balled her hands up into fists and yelled right back at him. Good for her. So Alex had picked up the woman downstairs. It might not be the most moral thing in world, but it was hardly worth all of this. From what it sounded like, Cousin Tom hadn't been all that vigilant before and was badly overreacting. Granted, both Alex and the girl seemed to be being incredibly naive about the whole thing, which made him all the more inclined to stay.
He moved into the room, and he could smell the alcohol on Tom's breath as sneered back at him. "This is a family affair and you should do yuirself a favor and get tha hell out. Take yuir goofy looking facemask and forget that any of this happened."
Scott folded his arms over his chest and stood his ground. "You're absolutely right, sir," he agreed evenly. "This is a family affair and as long as it is involves you threatening my brother, it involves me. So why don't we all sit down and discuss this like rational adults. Or better still, you go sleep it off and come back at a more decent hour, then talk about it."
He was fighting his own anger, and he could feel Jean growing progressively more agitated over their psychic link. He wondered what was going on up in the penthouse. He was about to ask her what was wrong when a surge of blinding rage shot through the link with his wife. He staggered back a few steps, letting out a soft cry and holding his head. "Jean," he mumbled, still reeling from the surge of negative emotions. He grabbed the door frame to steady himself.
What in the world was going on up there? < Jean, what's wrong? > he demanded through their link, ignoring the little drama in the room for the moment. < Honey, are you all right? >

Theresa's words hurt Tom, but in his current state, it only registered as anger. She was the only one willing to fire back at him. Normally he would have been proud, but when they got into these things, anger was all he knew until they finally made up. He turned back to her, staring daggers, as he often did when they fought. "As I recall, yuir the one who walked off in a huff. I simply gave ya what ya seemed ta want, space. Don't blame me because you made a mistake that ya can't take back now."
The other people in the room began to disappear. It was just Tom and Theresa now, like back at the keep, where they often fought over this or that. It normally started over something small an grew like a snowball on a hill, but they always wound up closer after everything was out. It was part of the reason they were so close. Their entire relationship seemed like a series of fights that only strengthened their bond. Deep down, below the booze and his disdain for Alex, he believed this would be the same and wasn't worried about her in the least.

No one else except Alex's brother bothered to say anything and that was simply to protect Alex. Theresa would have hugged him for that if she wasn't so mad at Tom. Her entire focus was on him and him alone at that moment and she knew from experience where this was headed.
The room would normally be starting to get very cold due to the fact there was a gaping hole in the wall but considering her temper at the moment, she felt no cold at all. When Tom turned his attention back to her, she saw the familiar look in his dark blue eyes. Eyes that, given just eight hours ago, she would have looked at in adoration instead of fury.
"As I recall, yuir the one who walked off in a huff. I simply gave ya what ya seemed ta want, space," he began.
Folding her arms in front of her and not backing down one inch, she replied in a heated voice, "I dinna walk away from ya anywhere. We were stuck together in a van that ya stole! Once we got here, I waited for ya and ya turned yuir back on me without saying one word! What did ya want me ta do, sleep the rest of the day?"
What he said next, Theresa doubted she would ever forgive him for. It was at that moment that she realized he would never look at her as anything more then the baby he rescued from the terrorist attack. The child he decided to raise on his own after his cousin abandoned his responsibilities. The girl he decided was better off in the care of nannies rather then the man she worshiped. To Tom, Theresa would never grow up, never be an adult, never make decision, even ones that he may not agree with.
"Don't blame me because you made a mistake that ya can't take back now," he finished with.
Theresa stood there, wanting to scream at him, wanting to make him hurt as much as she did. Instead, she reached her arm back and swung forward, her open palm connecting with his cheek. She had never physically hit him before but then again, he had never insulted her so deeply before.
Taking two steps away from him, her voice suddenly deadly calm along with her features, she said, "My mistake was in trusting ya, Tom. I will do the job that I was brought here ta do, whatever that may be but I will not be leaving with ya when we're done. Alex never was and never could be a mistake. You had no right ta come ta this room, no right ta question what I do on my 'off time'. I will be ready when we are called but until then, I'm staying with Alex." Turning to walk away from the man she loved like a father, Theresa bit her lip as tears sprang into her eyes.

Scott was at Alex's defense but it wasn't necessary. His suggestion was one that cousin Tom should take but it didn't matter anymore. Alex was hurt and heartbroken. He was almost lost in his own depressed thinking when Scott staggered and grabbed for something to hold him upright. Alex was there quickly to support his older brother. With his hand supporting his back, Alex was able to get Scott back up to a standing position.
"Scott, are you okay?" Alex asked. His depression was replaced with concern for the time being. "I think you can use some rest, brother," Alex suggested releasing his hold on him to see if Scott can stand on his own power.
Theresa and Tom's arguement was a family matter and Alex didn't feel comfortable listening in on it. They were both in a heated discussion and there's no telling when they would finish. The sudden loud sound snapped Alex's attention back to Theresa. She was pullering hand back from a motion of striking her cousin.
"My mistake was in trusting ya, Tom. I will do the job that I was brought here ta do, whatever that may be but I will not be leaving with ya when we're done. Alex never was and never could be a mistake. You had no right ta come ta this room, no right ta question what I do on my 'off time'. I will be ready when we are called but until then, I'm staying with Alex," Theresa said to him then turned away from her cousin. The pain on her face made Alex want to hold her and comfort her. Scott seemed to be okay with holding himself up but he was still concerned for him.
"Theresa," Alex said softly. What she said was out of anger but he hoped that it was true, that she was being completely honest with her cousin. He walked over to her and took her hand in his. "Are you okay?" he said in concern. She was under a lot of emotional stress. It was something that Alex didn't want her to go through. Both Theresa and Scott needed him. Scott was hurt for some reason and Theresa was hurt emotionally. Alex was torn between helping helping either one. He didn't know who needed him more. He glanced back up at Tom in disgust.
"You deserve no less for treating her like a helpless child," Alex told him. Anger filled his voice. Scott needed help back to his room and Alex wanted nothing more than to hold Theresa but Tom still needed a good kick in his head. Alex didn't know what Theresa needed to be called away to do but it didn't matter. He would be waiting for her when she was done. There was no reason for her to do anything she didn't want to.

After several harrowing minutes, Jean finally answered Scott. < I'm--I'll be fine, Scott.. > She didn't sound 'fine' to him, but at least she wasn't consumed by that inhuman anger anymore. Now her emotions were a mess though. She was upset and confused. He needed to go find her. Soon. But he also needed to make certain this drunken idiot didn't make his own mistake he couldn't take back.
"Scott, are you okay?" Alex asked, helping to steady him. "I think you can use some rest, brother.
Cyclops shook his head. He was fine, he was just suffering from indecision of who to go help first. Jean needed him, but the situation here could be dangerous to the entire hotel, considering the hole already in the wall. He heard Theresa slap her cousin and shook his head. This was probably going to get ugly now, especially when Theresa starting to verbally lay into her cousin.
"My mistake was in trusting ya, Tom. I will do the job that I was brought here ta do, whatever that may be but I will not be leaving with ya when we're done. Alex never was and never could be a mistake. You had no right ta come ta this room, no right ta question what I do on my 'off time'. I will be ready when we are called but until then, I'm staying with Alex."
Naivete aside, some of the things she was talking about made red flags raise for Scott. He remembered her saying something about Genosha. Tom hadn't said two words to her since they left Genosha. Then she spoke of a mission and a job and now she was claiming she would stay with his brother until it was time for the 'job'. And the well known mutant terrorist, who most well-known base was on Genosha, was upstairs trying to make an alliance with the X-Men. No, he was jumping to conclusions. There was no guarantee that Theresa and Tom were mutants, even though the hole blasted in the wall's trajectory was wrong for Alex to have done it, but had the proper one for Cousin Tom to have shot it.
Scott rubbed his temples, shaking his head. It may be a stretch, but he was beginning to wonder if Alex had not just taken up with a mutant terrorist working with Magneto. Oh this day was just getting better and better. Now there was no way he could leave. If Tom and Theresa worked for the Brotherhood, there was nothing they were not capable of. Well, Cousin Tom anyway. Theresa seemed to have no clue what was going on. About anything.
For now, he stayed in the doorway, watching and waiting to see what would go wrong next. < I'll be there in a minute, Jean, > he assured his wife through their link. < I've got a situation on my hands right now. I think Alex's new girlfriend might be a member of the Brotherhood. > He replayed the little drama he'd just witnessed in his mind for her. < Are you sure you're all right? >

Fire burned in Tom's eyes as he instinctively raised his cane to strike back. Just as he was about to hit Theresa, he looked down and realized what he was doing. His cane fell to the floor as a look of horror washed over his face. For a few secounds, he couldn't move. He merely stared at her back as she moved away from him. This was the most vulnerable he'd allowed himself to be seen since his childhood. He didn't care though. He only had one thought as he stood there. She slapped me.
Theresa had never slapped him before. They'd been face to face, screaming bloody murder, cursing each other's names, but she'd never slapped him. His comfort zone was completely gone, destroyed by one single act.
His eyes blinked rapidly as Tom began to realize where he was at again. Theresa turned away but the other two were staring right at him. He should have torn out there throats for seeing him like this, but he didn't have the strength. Picking up his cane, Tom walked to the door. He turned to look at theresa again. He wanted to apoligize with every fiber of his little black heart, but the words just weren't there. He couldn't even choke out a goodbye. Tom walked out and wandered to his room.

Theresa just stood there, in shock of what she had done to Tom and couldn't even reply to Alex when he asked if she was ok. He said something to Tom but it was lost to her. Everything felt like a dream, like she wasn't really standing there, she didn't really have this fight with Tom and she didn't really just hit him. Tears flowed down her cheeks freely.
As she felt Tom walk by, she looked up at him. He looked so hurt, so confused and like he wanted to say something but he couldn't. He didn't retaliate, he didn't try to hurt her back, he just looked at her like his world was crashing down. Theresa knew she would never forget that look the rest of her life.
He walked out the door and was gone. He had never left her without saying goodbye first, without kissing her forehead and telling her to take care. It had been his ritual for as long as she could remember. Memories came flooding at that point. Times of the two of them. Always just the two of them. It was apparent neither one had ever prepared for when someone else would enter their lives. Even her nannies were kept apart from the equation, never allowing themselves to get close to them.
"Oh, god, what have I done?" she whispered as she brought her hands to her face. Sinking to her knees, Theresa cried like she had never cried before. Her heart was breaking and she couldn't hold the tears back for anything.

When Tom raised his cain to attack her, rage started to boil through Alex's blood. The energy stored within him came straight to his hands in a heavily charged plasma wave. He was about to commit something that, in Alex's eyes, should never be done by any man by hitting a woman. And this was Theresa. If anyone hurt her in the way Tom was about to, he would injure them, not as in broken bones but as in intensive care. Alex held his hand out in Tom's direction, prepared to fire a blast before he could ever bring the can down onto her but Tom lowered his cain and never went through with the action that he started. The charge that Alex had started soon retreated back into his body cells to be used later as he brough his hand back down to his side. Luckily he didn't have to release some energy this morning otherwise it would have been much harder to control if he could control it at all. The anger he felt towards Theresa's cousin never left though. He didn't feel sorry for him, though. Tom deserved what he got.
Alex watched as Tom stood stilent for a little while until he just started to walk away. The pain of being slapped by his cousin was obvious on his face. Alex turned as Tom walked by, not trusting him, and stopped to look at Theresa momentarily before completely leaving. That's when Alex saw Scott standing perfectly fine on his own two feet without help from the doorway. It was a relieving sign that he was going to be okay from with what was ailing him.
Alex's attention snapped from Scott to Theresa when she said something incoherent and dropped to the floor. On her knees, she cried into her hands. It was a sad vision that hurt Alex more than he was going to admit at the moment. He needed to be there for both Theresa and Scott. Kneeling down, he placed a hand on her back to let her know that he was here for her.
"Theresa," Alex whispered. He had no idea what to say and that was all that came out when he opened his mouth. She was hurting and the sight of it made Alex hurt. He couldn't stop himself, he wanted to help as best as he could. Alex wrapped his arms around her and held her, stroking the bottom of her hair with his right hand. "Are you okay," Alex whispered in her ear trying to figure out what the problem was. If there was a way to fix it, Alex was willing to do anything in his power to to remedy what was on Theresa's mind.

Scott's hand flashed to his visor as Tom raised the cane to strike Theresa. Then her cousin seemed realize what he was about to do and dropped the cane instead. For a heartbeat, he almost felt sorry for the man. But then again, you reap what you sow. He stepped out of Tom's way as the man had retrieved his cane and stalked out of the room.
Then he finally heard his wife's reply in his mind. < Yes, I’m …sure. I just need some rest, and I’ll be fine. > Jean assured him through their psychic link. < I think you’re right about Alex’s girlfriend, Sweetheart. From what you showed me, it seems she and this Tom fellow aren’t exactly on the straight and narrow. Don’t rush, love. Take care of things there. I’ll be fine. >
She didn't sound fine to Scott and she certainly wasn't feeling fine. Theresa had collapsed to the floor, weeping. Alex immediately moved to comfort her. He wasn't needed here and Theresa was in no condition for an interrogation. And Jean needed him. He carefully removed his visor and replaced them with his sunglasses.
"I'm sorry, Alex," he said softly. "Looks like I chose a bad time to say hi. Anyway, Jean needs me and you've got someone who needs you. Jean and I staying in the penthouse with some colleagues. Maybe we can talk later." His gaze fell on Theresa, and he had no idea what to say or do. So he said nothing to her. "I've gotta go."
With that Scott headed down the hallway, retrieving his bag. Jean was not fine and he needed to find her now.

Theresa felt Alex's arms come around her and she turned into him, crying her heart out. She had hurt the one man who had ever loved her and she didn't know what to do about it. Her fingers grabbed his shirt, hanging on to him, needing Alex's strength right then.
She had no idea how long they were like that, him holding her and stroking her hair and she crying her heart out. Eventually the sobs dissipated and she just leaned against him, completely exhausted. As everything around her began to penetrate her mind once again, Theresa pushed back and looked around. Wiping her face off with her hands, she looked back to Alex and said in a hoarse voice, "I'm sorry ya didn't get ta see yuir brother, Alex. I'm sorry for tha mess Tom made in here. Ya can't stay here, not with tha hole in tha wall. How about if we get yuir things and move you ta my room?"
She had to see Tom. She had to talk to him, to try and make him understand about Alex. She had to see him alone and she was almost positive he had gone back to his own room. Looking back at Alex again, she said, "I have ta see my cousin. I have ta try to make him understand. And I have ta find out how he knew where ta find...." Her voice trailed off as a thought struck her. No, it was impossible. He couldn't have done that. Yeah, right, he most certainly would have done that without any regret. She pushed the anger back for now, at least long enough for her to get the truth. Tom would tell her.
