"Ask me anything. My life has been pretty much spent in Ireland at the Keep. Tom would come home when he wasn't working. Other then my sonic scream, I don't have any secrets," Theresa responded to Alex. There was nothing he wouldn't share with her.
"And I have no secrets to hide from you," Alex admitted. He had been honest with her about everything, even his feelings that he didn't know how to describe. It was sudden and he didn't know that he could this way towards someone, so quickly, too.
"Where are we going when we leave here, Alex? Where do ya call home? Ya mentioned going back ta college, is that something I can do too?" Theresa asked. Alex was a little bit surprised but understood that she wanted to know. We, the thought just made him smile now. It scared him before but he was no longer a solitary person, he was apart of something so much greater than being an independant person. He had someone here, that was absolutely perfect, that wanted to stay with him even though they barely knew each other. There was other issues that he needed to deal with though. His own insecurities that eat away at him whenever he got close to someone. There was no way he was going to let those problems get in the way of this relationship. Alex wouldn't be able to handle losing Theresa already.
"We live in Nebraska near my foster parents, a one bedroom apartment," Alex informed her. There was plenty of room for her to move any of her belongings in there. Alex didn't have very much. "I went to school at the University of Washington. I might look into going back and I'd love it if you were there with me," A wide grin spread across his lips. "We can always get an apartment up there near campus. I'm still trying to find away to block energy from my body. I'm still absorbing some even though I have this containment suit on," Alex told her. If by any chance Theresa could help, Alex would be very grateful to her, more than he already was. "You didn't go to school in Ireland?"

"We live in Nebraska near my foster parents, a one bedroom apartment," Alex replied to her "where are we going to live" question.
"Nebraska? What is Nebraska like?" Theresa asked in return. The States were so much larger then Ireland and there was so many more climates and conditions.
"I went to school at the University of Washington. I might look into going back and I'd love it if you were there with me. We can always get an apartment up there near campus. I'm still trying to find away to block energy from my body. I'm still absorbing some even though I have this containment suit on," Alex continued.
"Tha thought of going ta a real school is wonderful. Like a whole new adventure for me. I finished an education with tutors that Tom hired but it was always at tha keep. Never in a school setting," Theresa admitted with a grin. Then she thought of something else. "I'll have ta look into seeing if I can extend my passport or get a visa ta be here. Otherwise, I have ta go back ta Ireland and that just won't do. I will talk ta Tom about that sometime today," she said with a bit of worry. Getting a visa could be tricky but she had no criminal background and already had a place to live so maybe it wouldn't be too hard.
"Is yuir brother a mutant too, Alex? I remember tha mask he had on last night. Other then asking Tom if he knows of anyone who can help you, I don't have any ideas. Whatever it takes, though, we will find answers for ya," Theresa tried to reassure him. She had been blessed in that Tom knew what to do regarding her powers and had been able to train her.

"Nebraska? What is Nebraska like?" Theresa sounded interested which pleased Alex more than he already was. The woman was just remarkable. Alex grew up in Nebraska but he always tried to get out of there. It was a boring area.
"Plain," Alex said describing his home area. "There's nothing special there," Alex continued. There really wasn't either. There was no excitement. His childhood had been pretty plain and boring.
"Tha thought of going ta a real school is wonderful. Like a whole new adventure for me. I finished an education with tutors that Tom hired but it was always at tha keep. Never in a school setting," Theresa explained. Alex just stared in amazement.
"And I thought I was sheltered," Alex joked with her. Her ability to be so open with him asonished him but he was glad she was doing it. He was used to her accent but it was still beautiful to hear. "Do you miss Ireland?" Alex asked her. He would love to go with her to visit her home sometime to see where she was raised and grew up.
"I'll have ta look into seeing if I can extend my passport or get a visa ta be here. Otherwise, I have ta go back ta Ireland and that just won't do. I will talk ta Tom about that sometime today," Theresa said, changing the tone in her voice. Alex didn't recognize it but it sounded like she was a little worried over it. The visa could be tricky and it usually takes a long time to get. Alex never thought of this. There was only one way to make sure she got a visa and that was by marriage. The thought of marriage almost made Alex jump from his seat but instead he remained calm and tried to keep the same expression on his face on. He didn't want her to leave but marriage was scary. Alex wasn't ready and neither was their relationship. They had just started into this adventure together.
"If you have to go back to Ireland, I'll go with you," Alex told her. He still had her hand in his and he squeezed slightly to show her that he wouldn't give up on her. His feelings for her were strong and he wasn't going to lose the opportunity to see where it leads. If it led to marriage, then Alex would welcome it but for right now, they needed to take it one step at a time. Hopefully, there was a way to passed the fact that she was an illegal citizen here in America.
"Is yuir brother a mutant too, Alex? I remember tha mask he had on last night. Other then asking Tom if he knows of anyone who can help you, I don't have any ideas. Whatever it takes, though, we will find answers for ya," Theresa reassured him. She was willing to help him like she helped him release the energy this morning. Alex could only see an amazing woman in front of him and he hoped he could give her everything and anything she wanted. Theresa deserves it and much more than that.
"Scott is, yes," he told her. Alex couldn't get into it too much, his attention was more on how Theresa was willing to help. "Thank you, Theresa. You have no idea how much that means to me. My abilities are part of the reason I majored in geophysics. I made this suit to block out energy my body absorbs from objects around us. There's something else though. My body is still absorbing energy but I just don't know from where. I doubt your cousin can help with this. This is something I can figure out eventually," Alex explained to Theresa. She honestly wanted to help, Alex could tell and he would let her do what she can but at the same time, he didn't want to dump his problems onto her.

Theresa laughed at his description of Nebraska. "If that's the case, it sounds like the village near Cassidy Keep. There was never much ta do but buy food supplies." She didn't add that even that was difficult to do once the village found out about her powers.
"Do you miss Ireland?" he asked her.
"Miss it? No. I haven't been gone but a few days and I've been having too much fun since I left ta miss it. Maybe in a few weeks I'll begin ta think about it but not at this time," she told him honestly. She didn't miss the loneliness, the days on end where she had no one to talk to.
Theresa didn't notice the change in his expression when she mentioned the visa and thought it was sweet when he said, "If you have to go back to Ireland, I'll go with you."
"Oh, I think Tom has connections and will be able ta help me. He's traveled abroad so much that he's bound ta know what will need ta be done. I'm not terribly worried about it," she told him, trying to downplay the situation. She really did believe that Tom would be able to help her out and that he would help her.
"What do ya know about yuir brother and his wife? He dinna say much last night but honestly, even if he had, I doubt I would have paid attention. I'm still sorry about yuir room. Tom and I have fought like that all my life but it never got out of hand like that before," she apologized. One more thing to ask Tom about. Who was going to pay for the damages to the hotel room? Surely he had the money to do it since he made the mess.

Alex listened to her explainations and understood her views on her situation. If her cousin would help her then he might actually be a decent guy. From what he's seen of him, he wasn't impressed but Alex was willing to give him another shot simply because Tom was Theresa's cousin. If there was anything wrong about the situation though, Alex wouldn't hesitate to pull both of them out of there but not before putting Tom in his place. Tom was an unbelievable jerk to Theresa when he had no reason to be. Alex really wanted to hit him then, hopfully Theresa wouldn't hold it against him if he did. She did think very highly of the man though, so Alex doubted that he would be able to get away with hitting him, no matter how badly he wanted to do it.
"What do ya know about yuir brother and his wife? He dinna say much last night but honestly, even if he had, I doubt I would have paid attention. I'm still sorry about yuir room. Tom and I have fought like that all my life but it never got out of hand like that before," Theresa asked and apologized at the same time. It wasn't necessary but there wasn't anything that she did that Alex could find fault with. She was still perfect in his eyes and she handled her cousin like she should have.
"I only talked with them very briefly. Just enough time to find out that he is y brother and that he's married," After explaining the brief conversation the day before with Scott, Alex wanted another beer. he almost forgot that they were here to meet his brother and wife, he was so involved with hearing all about Theresa. Maybe he just wanted to forget about it right now. This was a stressful time. It's been twenty years. Twenty years, Alex repeated the thought a few times in his head. He snapped out of it to realize he almost forgot about Theresa's apology.
"Don't worry about my room. I can pay for it slowly," Alex said to her. There was still the fact that he was paying off his student loans as well. "I think you did what you had to. There was no excuse for how he treated you," Alex looked up at her. She was sitting next to him. There was an indescribable beauty to her. It was breathtaking. "You deserve better than that," Alex finished. You deserve better than what I can give you, Alex wanted to say but he stopped himself. It just wouldn't be right to acknowledge his failure to be successful in his line of study. He mainly focused on how to make his containment suit. Most other information was lost to him. "If you spent your life in Ireland, what brought you here? Just vacationing with your cousin?"

"No," Theresa said with a bit of stubbornness, "Tom can pay for the damage. It's not like he canna afford it." No matter how Tom had come by his money, he still had it and could still use it for this.
"If you spent your life in Ireland, what brought you here? Just vacationing with your cousin?" Alex asked.
Theresa tried not to wince, tried not to panic at the question. This was perhaps the only thing she couldn't tell him the truth about. Not because she didn't want to but because of the danger it would put them both in. With that thought, she began to wonder how Magneto was going to take the news of her not participating today. Suddenly, staying at the hotel where she could run into any one of them didn't seem like such a smart idea.
"Tom and I were vacationing in Genosha when he got called here on business. Since he dinna want ta leave me alone there, he brought me along. I have ta admit, I wasn't quite planning on this trip turning out like this but I'm glad it has. I think meeting you has been one of those things that fate must have worked out long ago. I shouldn't even be here today," she told him. What she said was the truth, at least about her meeting him and she hoped it would take the focus off why she had been there in the first place. Even if she had done nothing wrong and really didn't even know what she was supposed to have done, just knowing what Tom did for a "living" now made her wonder what she would have been doing.
"Do you have a flight back to Nebraska or are you driving back?" she asked. As much as she wanted him to spend time with his brother, Theresa felt the need to leave Washington as soon as she was able to talk to Tom.

Scott watched as Jean got ready, using her powers to hurry things along. It would have been disconcerting if he were not accustomed to it by now. She looked lovely, as always. He was lucky to have her. She glanced over at him and told he looked nice, allowing him to set aside any worry that his clothes might clash. He noticed his tenseness as well. "You're pacing," she teased as she took his arm and they left their room.
< I'm nervous, > he admitted, even if it was obvious. < It's been twenty years. We don't know anything about each other. We're not the same kids we were back then. And there's a lot I can't tell him about. > A great deal of his adult life was wrapped up in the X-men, the school, and Xavier. How would he explain what he'd been doing with himself and not tell his brother about these things? At least he knew Scott was a mutant, and he was one himself. That made things a bit less complicated.
He brooded quietly in the elevator as it descended down to the first floor of the hotel. He knew Jean could sense his worry, and he offered her a nervous smile as the elevator opened, squeezing her hand gently as they stepped off of it. He was glad she had come with him. He could face Alex on his own, but Jean would give him the emotional support and keep her head when he was too overwhelmed with the situation to think straight. He had to be very careful what he told his brother.
Scott scanned the restaurant and saw that Alex was indeed there, waiting for them. With him was the woman from the night before, Theresa. He had to admit she was lovely, but then, he had a marked preference for redheads. One in particular actually. He squeezed Jean's hand again, then crossed towards the table, trying to keep the nervousness he was feeling from his expression.
He stopped by the table, offering Alex and his female companion a strained, but friendly smile. "Sorry if we're late," he began. "Last night was a long night." Not wishing to deal with that subject, he extended his hand towards Theresa. "We didn't get a chance for introductions before. I'm Scott Summers." He gently place his other arm around Jean's waist and glanced slightly in her direction. "This is my wife, Jean."

"No, Tom can pay for the damage. It's not like he canna afford it," Theresa replied to Alex. There was no way he was going to give in to her on this subject. Her cousin won't be paying for the room, he should have to but Alex was going to take the bill. It wouldn't be too much of a problem. Just because Tom had money didn't mean he could do whatever he wanted and break anything he felt like, thought the man who just destroyed a dumpster in the back of the hotel.
Alex listened to Theresa's explaination about her vacation in Genosha. Alex never been to the island but he's heard that it was beautiful there. He was about to ask her more about her vacation but she went on to talk about fate making them meet. Her spoken thoughts made Alex smile. He was glad she felt that way. Alex had become very attached to her and he was glad she felt the same way.
"Do you have a flight back to Nebraska or are you driving back?" Theresa asked, changing the subject. It was a good thing, too. Alex was thinking of a way to confess his feelings for but he just couldn't get the words to roll off of his tongue. It just wasn't working for him. The thought process was there but the words were missing.
"I have a flight but I can try to trade it in so that we can drive down there together," Alex said to her. He didn't give it much thought until she pointed it out. Hopefully the plane ticket is refundable and he could use that money to rent a car for the trip. A road trip with Theresa sounded fun to him, there was a lot that they can learn from each other and that sounded like the perfect chance to do it.
Out of the corner of his eye, Alex looked up from Theresa to find his brother standing by the table, his wife Jean right next to him. Alex stood to greet him, trying to put his forgotten nervousness behind him., There was no time for it, Theresa had successfuly taken his mind off of his brother and now he can focus on getting to know Scott and Jean.
"Sorry if we're late, last night was a long night," Scott informed them. Alex understood, there was nothing that can be done about having priotrities to take care of. It seemed like his brother was an important person in whatever it was that he did. "We didn't get a chance for introductions before. I'm Scott Summers. This is my wife, Jean," Scott introduced himself and his lovely wife. Alex was glad to see that Theresa's nervousness should be calmed by the welcome from his older brother.
"You weren't late, we were early," Alex said to them. He turned to introduce the beautiful red head beside him. "and this is Theresa," Alex informed them. I don't even know her last name, he thought to himself. "I'm glad you two could make it. I hope breakfast doesn't cut to deep into your schedules," Alex commented. He didn't want to disrupt what they were doing in the city. With their conversation the day before, it seemed like they were busy people.

Alex listened to her talk and when she asked about his travel plans, he replied, "I have a flight but I can try to trade it in so that we can drive down there together."
Theresa was about to ask him if that was possible to do when he suddenly stood up. Drawing her attention away from him, she saw that the man who had been in Alex's room last night approached the table with a drop dead gorgeous woman. She stood along with Alex and when the couple approached and held her breath. No matter how much Alex had distracted her thinking, she was now facing his family and her nervousness was back in full force.
Scott smiled and offered her his hand as he said, "We didn't get a chance for introductions before. I'm Scott Summers. This is my wife, Jean."
Theresa took the offered hand but before she could reply, Alex added, "...and this is Theresa." Trying to give the couple a smile, she said, "Theresa Rourke. Tis a pleasure ta meet ya."
She almost cringed openly at how strong her accent got when she was nervous. As they all sat down, she heard Alex say, "I'm glad you two could make it. I hope breakfast doesn't cut to deep into your schedules."
The comment confused her. What did they do that was so important that Alex had to apologize for wanting to catch up with a brother he hadn't seen in twenty years? Alex had admitted that Scott was a mutant, was his wife one too? Were they here because of the hearings and the law that Magneto talked about? There were too many questions but she couldn't ask any of them without raising questions about herself.
Theresa had no idea what else to say, this was a meeting between Alex and Scott and she was feeling very out of place suddenly. Thankfully, the waitress came over to take their order. Once again, Theresa wondered if she would be able to eat anything. Her stomach was in knots and she just had a bad feeling about this breakfast. Giving the waitress her order, she looked down at her empty place setting and prayed she didn't screw this up.

< I'm nervous, > Scott explained as they went down to the first floor on the elevator. < It's been twenty years. We don't know anything about each other. We're not the same kids we were back then. And there's a lot I can't tell him about. > Jean understood what he meant. There was so much about his life that he wouldn’t be able to explain to Alex. Not right away over breakfast.
< Tell him what you can. > Jean replied gently as they walked out the elevator, giving his hand a soft squeeze in return < I’m sure he’ll appreciate just being able to spend time with you, just like you are with him. It’ll go well, I know it. > Jean tried to reassure him, offering him a comforting smile before they entered the restaurant. She would be there as well to give him any emotional support he needed, knowing how difficult this was.
Jean scanned the crowd with Scott, immediately spotting the blonde-haired man she’d met the previous day. He was sitting with a young pretty redhead. As Jean and Scott approached, the scene Scott showed her from last night in Alex’s room entered her mind. Scott had mentioned he thought she might be working with the Brotherhood, and from what Jean ‘saw,’ she had to agree. As they drew nearer, Jean placed it in the back of her mind for now as Scott introduced them. He didn’t seem too wary, and he had been in the actual room when the disturbance between Theresa and the other man broke out.
"We didn't get a chance for introductions before. I'm Scott Summers. This is my wife, Jean." Scott held out his hand to her, slipping the other around Jean’s waist.
"You weren't late, we were early." Jean smiled at that. Alex turned to Theresa, "and this is Theresa." Jean noticed he didn’t mention her last name but didn’t think too much on it.
Theresa accepted Scott’s hand and filled in the blank, "Theresa Rourke. Tis a pleasure ta meet ya." Jean’s eyes lit, hearing her accent. It sounded Irish, or maybe Scottish.
"You have a lovely accent, Theresa." Jean complimented her, sensing she was a little nervous. They all seemed to be feeling that way, but it was expected at a time like this. She held out her hand as well.
"I'm glad you two could make it," Alex added as a waitress came to begin taking orders. "I hope breakfast doesn't cut to deep into your schedules." Alex had remembered why she and Scott were in DC.
"Oh, no," Jean replied smiling, "We have time. We wouldn’t pass on this for anything. Thank you for inviting us." It wasn’t every day that Scott got to spend time with his brother whom he hadn’t seen in twenty years. Even if she would have had to stay behind to work on reviewing information for the Senate meeting, Jean would have encouraged Scott to go for breakfast.
Sitting down at the table Jean quickly glanced through the menu and ordered as the waitress came around. Closing it she slipped one hand underneath the table, holding onto Scott’s to offer him comfort as well as herself. "Everything looks so nice for the holidays," Jean commented, breaking the ice. Christmas was always one of her favorite times of the year. "I think there was a tree-lighting ceremony here yesterday."

Scott took a seat next to Jean, staying silent through the pleasantries. He felt her squeeze his hand under the table, a silent offer of comfort. She knew how uncomfortable most this kind of potentially emotional situation made him. He could discuss all day about tactics and military history, but emotionally charged social situations threw him completely for a loop. He usually just sat there and let Jean do all the talking, only speaking when asked a question or if he had something to add to conversation. He couldn't do that this time.
He picked up the menu, opening it as the waitress approached. He ordered something light, his tone calm and confident. Too bad that wasn't how he felt. He handed the waitress the menu then turned his attention back to the others at the table. Jean was trying to break the ice. He squeezed her hand under the table, sending a grateful feeling her way. She had sense how nervous he was and most likely Alex and Theresa were as well. "Everything looks so nice for the holidays," Jean said, starting the conversation on a neutral subject. "I think there was a tree-lighting ceremony here yesterday."
Scott decided to try. Tree lighting, tree lighting... He remembered something about Alex and Theresa going to the tree lighting being mentioned in the young Irish woman's tirade against her cousin the night before. It didn't even occur to him in his nervous attempt to make conversation, that bringing last night up at all might not be the best idea. He looked at Alex. "Theresa said something last night about you going to the tree lighting," he said, trying to sound casual. "How was it?"

"Oh, no, we have time. We wouldn’t pass on this for anything. Thank you for inviting us," Jean replied back to him after some very nice compliments to Theresa. Everything made him smile. She was a nice person, from what he has known of her. Jean seemed to be the voice for them as Scott had been more reserved than anything. Of coarse, Alex understood. This was a very awkward situation but he was glad that it was happening. Alex simply nodded and sat down in his chair. The waitress came and took thier orders. He finished giving her his order and handed the waitress the menu.
"Everything looks so nice for the holidays. I think there was a tree-lighting ceremony here yesterday," Jean went on to spark up conversation after the waitress left. She seemed to be very outgoing which was probably best for this situation. Otherwise, who knew who would have spoken up first.
"Theresa said something last night about you going to the tree lighting. How was it?" Scott said. He had a good memory. Alex didn't even catch Theresa saying that, he was focused on something else she had said but she had already proven Alex's paranoia wrong. That thought made him turn to look at her and take in her beauty with his eyes once again. He couldn't get enough of her. Theresa radiated beauty as much as Alex radiated heat. The question was directed to both of them originally but Scott had switched the attention towards Theresa.
"It's definately worth going again," Alex said remembering their experience with it. "If we're still in the area at the time, I hope to go see it again before we leave," Alex said then immediately regretted saying it. Is this going to be the last time I'll be face to face with Scott? Alex shook off the thought. If Theresa wanted to add to the answer then she could. He didn't want to try to steal attention away from her. She was nervous just like he was. "How long are you two here for?"

"You have a lovely accent, Theresa," Scott's wife, Jean, said to her. Lovely? It sounded so..... uneducated around these people.
Giving Jean a smile, Theresa knew she wouldn't be able to talk at the moment if her life depended on it. Jean seemed to be the more outspoken of the two and kept talk light for the time being. Theresa was really starting to wonder why she was there when Scott's question caught her off guard. "Theresa said something last night about you going to the tree lighting. How was it?"
Alex replied first and it was a good thing. At the mention of last night and the incident in Alex's room, Theresa's face began to flush. It was one thing to discuss it with Alex in private but to be reminded by his brother that not only did they also probably think she was a 'stupid whore', as Tom practically called her, but that her and Tom almost tore Alex's room and half the hotel apart with their shouting was humiliating. Scott had witnessed almost the whole thing and had undoubtedly told Jean about it. Theresa wondered if the floor was going to open up and swallow her yet.
Even more nervous, and a bit upset with herself, she replied, "Aye, it twas a beautiful sight. Tha customs here are wonderful." Oh, god, and her accent was getting worse by the second.
Almost in a full panic now, Theresa suddenly pushed her chair back and stood up. Looking at Alex and only Alex, she said, "I have ta find tha ladies room. Excuse me." She went off in search of the bathrooms, which were thankfully marked and easy to find.
Walking in and locking herself in a stall, she leaned her back against the door and tried to take deep breaths. She was so completely out of her league at the moment, it wasn't funny. How did she expect herself, a little Irish lass who had rarely been outside her town let alone Ireland until several days ago, to make it through this? And why did Scott and Jean make her so nervous?

Jean knew Scott wasn’t as comfortable with conversation as he would have liked. Especially in a situation like this one. She could feel his grateful wave of emotion as she began the conversation.
"Theresa said something last night about you going to the tree lighting. How was it?" Scott asked. Jean knew he wanted everything to go well with his brother and would try his hardest to get to know him, though situations like these weren’t exactly his forte. Jean smiled a bit, feeling proud of him. She knew this wasn’t easy. Give him the Danger Room and a battle simulation and he’d be able to come up with and delegate a plan of action at the drop of a hat. But a social situation like this? That was a different story.
"It's definately worth going again," Alex replied. "If we're still in the area at the time, I hope to go see it again before we leave." Jean nodded, thinking it must have been really nice to see. She wondered when Alex would be leaving, and he’d said ‘we’ in his reply. Jean assumed that meant he and Theresa were leaving together. She wondered for a moment if Scott had picked up on that and thought the same.
"Aye, it twas a beautiful sight. Tha customs here are wonderful." Theresa added, her accent thick. Jean wanted to ask her where she was born, wanting to get to know her better, but something about Theresa’s behavior made Jean pause. Jean tried to get a sense of Alex’s girlfriend and discovered large waves of insecurity and anxiety.
"How long are you two here for?" Alex didn’t seem aware of Theresa’s apprehension as he went on. Jean was tempted to tell Theresa it was all right via telepathy to help soothe her nerves, but before she could decide what to do, Theresa stood up abruptly.
"I have ta find tha ladies room. Excuse me." Theresa didn’t glance at either Scott or Jean, only focusing on Alex as she excused herself. Jean’s brows knitted slightly.
< I’m going to go see if Theresa is all right. She seems very anxious. > Jean looked at Scott, giving his hand a squeeze under the table. With Jean gone Scott would have to talk with his brother without Jean’s help to cover any potential awkward silences. < Everything will be fine. > Jean reassured him and sent him feelings of comfort before she slid back her chair and stood, smiling at Alex.
"I think I’ll join her. We ladies tend to travel to the bathroom in packs anyway." Jean teased lightly before she headed to the ladies room, giving Scott’s shoulder an encouraging touch. She left him to field Alex’s question.
Entering the bathroom Jean could see the stalls were open, save for one. Jean saw the back of Theresa’s legs as the young redhead leaned against the stall door. Pausing Jean stood near the sinks and called out gently, "Theresa? It's Jean. Are you all right?"

Scott listened as attentively to Alex and Theresa's responses, even he could see how nervous she was. Well, they were all nervous of course, but maybe bringing up the altercation with her uncle the night before had been a bad idea. When she suddenly stood up and excused herself to the ladies room, he was certain of it, especially when Jean squeezed his hand under the table and spoke through their link. < I’m going to go see if Theresa is all right. She seems very anxious. Everything will be fine. >
He watched as Jean rose and briefly felt her hand on his shoulder. "I think I’ll join her. We ladies tend to travel to the bathroom in packs anyway." He offered her a brief, uncomfortable smile as she headed off after Theresa.
Scott's eyes followed her out of sight from behind his ruby quartz sunglasses, then he turned his attention back to Alex. Great, they hadn't been here five minutes and the conversation had gone from awkward to worse. Then he realized Alex had asked him a question. "How long are you two here for?" Scott took a long drink of his water, trying to cover his discomfort.
"We're only here for hearing," he replied to Alex, not even wanting to broach the subject of the ladies departing. Of course, he couldn't tell him why they were here for the hearing, and anything else about his life. At least not yet. He stalled for more time, hoping Alex wouldn't ask too many questions about his life. "You said you were here for a convention. What sort of convention? How's it going? Any interesting speakers?"
Oh, he hated making small talk. He hoped Jean and Theresa would get back soon, or that the food would come, before Alex started asking more uncomfortable questions.
